Sauk Prairie Area Literacy Council

Our Mission:  To empower adult learners of all backgrounds in the Sauk Prairie area to successfully navigate the English language at home, on the job, and in their community.

Imagine what it would be like....

...if you couldn't understand instructions at your new job,
...if you couldn't tell your doctor what is wrong when you are ill,
...if you couldn't communicate with your child's teacher.

This is why the Sauk Prairie Area Literacy Council (SPALC) exists: to make the lives of our neighbors easier and more successful by helping them improve their functional literacy skills. Improved literacy can mean a safer, more productive life and encourage a stronger connection to our community.

The ability to communicate effectively in English opens doors to new opportunities and smooths the interactions of daily life.  We seek to serve adults in our community who want to improve their English language skills, earn their GED, apply for citizenship or meet other goals.  Our primary service area includes Sauk City and Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. SPALC recruits and trains adult volunteer tutors to assist learners, at no cost, in identifying and achieving their goals, so they can function more successfully at home, on the job, and in their communities. SPALC supports the efforts of tutors, learners, and other volunteers by making appropriate resources, facilities, and funding available. (See TUTORS and LEARNERS pages to read more.) SPALC collaborates with other community service agencies and literacy providers, such as Wisconsin Literacy, to promote awareness of literacy in the community.
