Tutors
Serving adults of all backgrounds who want to improve their functional literacy skills.

Tutors are the Heart of SPALC!

We'd love to have you consider becoming a volunteer tutor for the Sauk Prairie Area Literacy Council!  Many often say that volunteering with SPALC has enriched their lives. You can join them!  We are always seeking new volunteers as new students continually reach out to us asking for someone to assist them.

What Do I Need to Know About Becoming a Tutor?
  • No experience is required, and it is not necessary to speak another language.
  • There are no costs to either the tutor or the student for class materials.
  • For your benefit, and ours, we have first-time tutors attend a "Tutor Preparation Workshop" to provide you with an overview of what to expect, a handbook full of valuable information, and the opportunity to hear from others or talk one-on-one with current SPALC tutors and Board members.
  • Tutors meet with their students in public places, such as public libraries or coffee shops.
  • Tutoring can be done virtually if technology/internet access is readily available.
  • Typical time commitment is 1-2 contact hours per week.
  • We provide ongoing support for our tutors, including full access to our membership resources on Intercambio.com, the publisher of our materials.
  • Periodically, SPALC holds "in-service" type tutor gatherings, called "Tutor Idea Exchanges" (TIEs) to share stories of successes and challenges.  The most recent session was on September 30, 2021, as a 'refresher' for those of us on hiatus due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.  A copy of information shared is available here:  SPALC Tutor Meeting, September 2021.
  • Our Tutor Resource Center is located in the George Culver Community Library, Sauk City and The Ruth Culver Community Library in Prairie du Sac has English language materials available for the tutor and the student to check out.
