Tutors

Tutors are the Heart of SPALC!

We'd love to have you consider becoming a volunteer Tutor for the Sauk Prairie Area Literacy Council.  Many often say that volunteering with SPALC has enriched their lives. You can join them!  We are always seeking new volunteers to tutor as new learners continually reach out to us asking for assistance.

What Do I Need to Know About Becoming a Tutor?
  • No tutoring experience is required, and it is not necessary to speak another language.
  • All materials are provided at no cost to both the Tutor and the Learner.
  • Tutors are provided training to get an overview of what to expect, an introduction to our materials, a SPALC Tutor Guide and the opportunity to address any questions.
  • Ongoing support for our Tutors is available, including full access to the publisher of our materials on Intercambio.com.
  • Matching a Tutor with a Learner is done carefully and based on your preferences indicated on the Tutor Application Form.
  • Once matched with a Learner, time commitment is typically 1-2 hours per week.
  • Tutors meet with their Learners in public places, such as public libraries or coffee shops.
  • Tutoring can be done virtually if technology/ Internet access is readily available.
  • SPALC holds periodic "in-service" type Tutor gatherings to share stories of successes and challenges.  For example, a recent session served as a refresher for those on hiatus during COVID-19 restrictions.  To see a sample of what we covered, a copy is available here:  SPALC Tutor Meeting, September 2021.
  • Our Tutor Resource Center is located in the George Culver Community Library, Sauk City and The Ruth Culver Community Library in Prairie du Sac has English language materials available for the tutor and the student to check out.
