Prospective Tutors
Serving adults of all backgrounds who want to improve their functional literacy skills.

We need you!

We hope you will consider becoming a volunteer tutor for SPALC.  Tutors are the front lines in improving our community and often say that being a tutor has enriched their lives. You can join them!

We are always seeking new volunteers because learners are continually reaching out to us.  (If you know of any prospective learners - send them our way!)  We supply what's needed all at no cost - training to get you started, teacher and learner workbooks and other materials.  Our primary Curriculum is one developed by Intercambio. This short video describes the curriculum.

We have some tutors who choose to develop their own "curriculum" and course materials based on the needs of their learner with the many resources available in our libraries and on the web. While this can be time-consuming, it also can be nicely custom-tailored to the needs and goals of the learner.  (We can assist with this customization if needed.)

No experience is required to be a tutor, nor is it necessary to speak another language. We hold tutor training sessions to get you comfortable to be matched with a learner and get you on your way. Tutors meet with learners in public places such as a library or coffee shop. The typical commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

We provide ongoing support for our tutors and keep our website Current Tutors page updated with handy access to resources.  New tutors can also request to "shadow" an experienced tutor (observe an actual tutor/learner session with the permission of the learner) before, during or after training, to see how a class might go.  SPALC holds "in-service" type tutor gatherings, featuring a topic of interest to continue tutor training, and to provide the opportunity to share stories of successes or discuss and resolve any challenges they may be encountering.  It's always of interest and helpful to hear how others are doing.
